Hello Friends and Enemies,
Firstly my must apologise for my hiatus from Disco Intro. I have been living it up in Byron Bay. Land of the rich and beautiful and the poor and smelly. I tried to do updates from a interweb cafe, but the thought of fighting through the masses of tiny euro's with over-sized backpacks was to much for me. But now I am plugged in again, there should be more regular posts coming your way, as well as some shameless promotion of our upcoming cabaret show. Now let's see what music I have discovered lately...

Spoonbill

I discovered Spoonbill while in Nimbin for the Mardi Grass Law Reform rally a few weeks back. Spoonbill's electronica is a psychedelic collection of beats and uniquley Australian samples. You can see Spoonbill this coming weekend (30Jun08) at BushCatZ, which is a three day event held in Northern New South Wales. He will also be playing at the UTS Loft Bar Thursday 5th June, for the Gourmet Scavenger album launch. And the Cairns Winter Solstice Festival June 20 -23.

Great Apes

I discovered Great Apes last year on FBi Radio, and fell in love with their track Steve, which is one of the best pieces of electro-weird I've heard in the last year. I was lucky enough to catch one of there live show's at Candy's Apartment last year, fucking amazing. David Charles Lomas is a sight to be seen on stage and Steve Allison's programming and drums are fantastic.
Great Apes are playing MUM @ The World Bar, Kings Cross 4th April 2008. I suggest you check out their show, it'll be a hogshead of merriment. See event on Facebook.
Another trck of their's I'm digging is I Don't Know When To Stop, which has some sweet spacey sounds and Lomas' ever dusky vocals. Here it is...

Au Clair de la Lune
At the Association for Recorded Sound Collections annual conference the worlds oldest recorded sound was played. It was recorded by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, a Parisian inventer. He used a "phonautograph," a device that engraved sound waves onto a sheet of paper blackened by the smoke of an oil lamp.
The recording is a ten second segment of the French folk song Au Clair de la Lune made April 9, 1860.

Jamie Lloyd is a prolific producer of electronica signed to the Future Classic label, based in Sydney, Australia. He creates some great chilled beats that have refinement and charm. I found this sweet remix of May I? done by Quarion, who has given the track a warm, deep house feel to it.

The Juan Maclean

Alrighty, time for some disco, claps, bongos and all. The Juan Maclean is part of New York's DFA label and is former guitarist for Six Finger Satellite, who were produced by James Murphy. Nancy Wang, also of LCD Soundsystem fame, performs the vocals on this uplifting track.

The Presets

I wanted to write about neo-disco group Glass Candy, and how great they are. But alas, my brain is mush after boozing all weekend, while celebrating the death of baby jesus and subsequent removal of his remains from his tomb by jackals and necrophiliacs...

Anyway, you should have a listen to these dazzlers from Portland, USA and figure it out for yourselves. Ida No is a quirky elf who sings with an ethereal voice and is someone I am really looking forward to seeing on stage. The music is written by Johnny Jewel, who also does production for Oxford Arts Factory Friday 28th March 2008. They will be supported by Mike Simonetti of the Italians Do It Better label. Legs Eleven

Legs Eleven is a Sydney producer, who has been writing some great minimal tech and deep house tracks. Her music is a labyrinth of complex beats, which sound as clear to my ears as the star-filled space between them.
The track Reflex One (Djinxx’s Vision), which I have chosen to post here, seduced me with it's disco overtones. This track was released in 2007 on the Reflex One EP from Sula Muse Recordings.

Vestax VCM-600 Ableton Live Controller

Vestax are due to release their new midi controller. I’d love get my hands on one of these fancy toys. Hmmm, look at all those knobs and buttons…
Designed with Ableton Live users in mind, the VCM-600 can control 160 parameters of MIDI compliant software.It is set out for sequencing and DJing with six channels. Each channel has its own faders, transpose buttons, an EQ section with cut buttons, and send/returns section. There is also pitch shift buttons, a cross fader and effects section. LED panels on each side of the controller illuminate the controls. It is due to be released mid-2008. It will retail for US$799.
I’d better return to a life skip dipping and prostitution, if I’m going to acquire one of these.

Captain Sensible

Captain Sensible didn't like early mornings or pile drivers, so he wrote this track to express his feelings and came up with this little synth pop gem. It's got damn funky basslines and brit-punk rapping and cutesy school girl backing vocals.

It was released on the 1982 LP Women And Captains First on A&M Records. Captain Sensible was also a founding member of the punk band The Damned. He went on to form The Blah! Party, a political party created to fight tyranny and seagulls.

ESG An amazing family from the Bronx, ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold) were Renee, Valerie and Marie Scroggins, later the band included two of the groups daughters, Chistelle and Nicole.

They released Come Away With ESG in 1983 on 99 Records. They played the opening night of Hacienda in Manchester, as well as the last night of Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage. Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy are two of many artist to sample ESG and have influenced acts such as Beastie Boys and the amazing LCD Soundsystem.

I originally discovered them on Soul Jazz Records’ New York Noise complilation of 2003. Come Away is fantastic album, with the track Dance being of particular note, getting bottoms wiggling and ears smiling. Motown crossed with the Bronx. The Scroggins sisters are still ruling.
